PROJECT SUMMARY
WHAT IS NEO?
NEO is an initiative that utilises open data to encourage recycling among HDB (public housing) residents. It consists of a mobile application and an interactive wall where smart recycling bins are located.
The underlying principle of NEO is collaboration and competition. It uses data such as the national recycling rate and translates that into a meaningful visualization for the residents. It also highlights how a personal act contributes to the nation's recycling efforts and rewards them for their work.
NEO WALL
An e-ink display is situated above neighbourhood recycling bins. It reflects the neighbourhood's recycling rates compared to the national average. When a resident recycles an item in the bin, the smart recycling bin weighs the amount of material recycled. An animation is then triggered, showing the individual's contribution to the overall recycling efforts, proportionate to the amount recycled. The resident then syncs this data with their mobile application to update their personal data.
MOBILE APPLICATION
The NEO app shows the resident their recycling contributions and habits and compares them with the national average. The application also allows them to connect with friends to view one another's recycling journeys. They can compete with their friends or work together to complete individual and group challenges. The application also shows how communities fare against one another, leveraging the power of peer influence and community spirit to improve recycling rates.
